This time of year is really exciting. You're getting ready to start a new chapter at the University and move into your new home in halls.
Now that you’ve applied for accommodation, everything might be starting to feel a bit more real. Alongside that excitement, it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous too!
You might be wondering:
- What will it be like when I arrive?
- Who will my new flatmates be?
- How will I settle in and feel at home?
These thoughts are really common. Moving into student accommodation is a big change, and even the most confident people can find it a bit daunting at first.
Advice from Residence Life
At Residence Life, we’ve supported students through this transition for years, and it’s very rare to meet someone who isn’t feeling at least a little unsure at the start.
Our advice? Try to embrace those feelings rather than push them away. Nerves can actually be a good thing, encouraging you to step outside your comfort zone and try new things.
We’ll be here to help along the way. Throughout the year, we create opportunities for you to meet other students, try new activities, and build connections. And chances are, the people you meet in those first few weeks will be feeling just like you.

Support from Residence Life
Despite what you might see online, most students don’t instantly find their best friends during Welcome Week and that’s completely okay. Building friendships and feeling settled can take time.
It’s also normal to experience moments of loneliness or homesickness, especially in the first few weeks or months. You’re not alone in feeling this way.
Our Residence Life Welfare Team is here to support you. Whether you need someone to talk to or you’re looking for advice on settling in, we’re here to listen and help.
If you need support, you can contact:
- Email: reslifewelfare@glasgow.ac.uk
- Phone: +44 (0) 141 330 2941
We recommend saving these details so you have them handy when you arrive. If you want to know more about our service before you arrive, please do get in touch.
We’re here for you
However you're feeling when you move in (excited, nervous, or a bit of both!) the Residence Life team is here to support you and help you make the most of your time in halls.
We can’t wait to welcome you. And if you see us around, please do come and say hi!
