A selection of some of the great things happening this month

October is here and it's going to be a terrific month for events in Glasgow! In our first What's On Guide for 2024/25 we've handpicked a few for your consideration.

Remember that there's lots more going on than we could possibly list here so keep an eye on the My SRC App and sites like University of Glasgow Events, What's On Glasgow, Visit Glasgow  and others for up to date news on the latest shows and events.

At the University

Seonaid Aitken (University Concert Hall, 3 October 2024)

Join the award-winning violinist and BBC Broadcaster as she pays tribute to her Jazz violin hero Stéphane Grappelli. The concert is part of the Thursday Lunchtime concert series and is free. 

Lord Kelvin in the Hunterian Museum (Open until 31 December)

As one of the most important figures in the history of science and the University of Glasgow, William Thomson aka Lord Kelvin, has helped shape the world as we know it. Find out more about the great man through the wonderful display dedicated to his life and work in the Hunterian Museum.

Kelvin in the Collections (University Library, 29 October)

This unique session will explore the life and career of Lord Kelvin through the personal papers, correspondence and University records held in the University's Archives & Special Collections.

AJ Bell Great Scottish Run (George Square, 6 October)

The Great Scottish Run is back for 2024! Join a 10k or Half-Marathon and take in some of Glasgow’s most iconic sights from George Square to Glasgow Green🏃

Culture

A Talk About The Temperance Movement in Scotland (Willow Tea Room, 6 October)

Did you know that Scotland was once home to a vibrant and influential Temperance Movement that saw some areas outlawing pubs in in the 1920s? Dr Elspeth King will take you through the history of the movement in the historic Willow Tea Rooms. 

Titanic Exhibition (SEC, 12-14 October)

The story of the most iconic ocean liner in history is brought to life through interactive exhibits, photographs, accounts from survivors and genuine artefacts recovered from the wreckage. Not to be missed!

Play, Pie and a Pint (Òran Mór, Throughout October)

Fancy a bit of theatre with your lunch? Head to Òran Mór in Byres Road for their A Play, A Pie and A Pint series.

Partick Farmers Market (Mansfield Park, 12 and 26 October)

Looking for seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit, quality meats and delicious home baking? Partick Farmers market is the place for you! 

Music

Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) perform Mahler's Symphony No2 (Royal Concert Hall, 5 October)

Classical fans will be delighted to hear that the Royal Scottish National Orchestra will be performing one of the great symphonies of all time, Symphony No. 2 in C minor, by Gustav Mahler. Even better, as a student, you’ll also be eligible for a discount on your ticket!

Crowded House (OVO Hydro, 9 October)

Hey now, hey now, Antipodean legends Crowded House are back with a new album and they’re coming to the Hydro on Wednesday 9 October. Let’s hope they bring the weather with them😉

The Sound Lab - Music Makes Glasgow (Drygate, 12 October)

To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Glasgow based charity The Sound Lab are hosting a brilliant, all-day fundraising event, Music Makes Glasgow. They've got a fantastic line up including Terra Kin (BBC Introducing Scottish Act of the Year 2023) and Haiver (Billy Kennedy from Frightened Rabbit’s new project) plus loads of students and young people they support as well. There will also be workshops, DJing, screen-printing and music production all on offer as alongide a ‘meet the industry’ group for anyone investigating a career in music

Republica (Òran Mór, 18 October)

Shout it from the rooftops! 90s favourites Republica are back and ready to go at Òran Mór on Friday 18th.

Biffy Clyro (Barrowlands, 24, 25 and 26 October)

'Mon the Biff! Scotland's top rockers make a triumphant return to Glasgow with three nights at the Barrowlands.

Paul Weller (Barrowlands, 29 October)

The Modfather is back in town, touring his seventeenth solo studio album 66. Catch him at the Barrowlands on the 28th and 29th.
