An (HMO) Inspector Calls!

Posted 4 weeks ago

Coming to UofG Residences this month

This February, we’ll be welcoming officials from Glasgow City Council to many of our residences as they carry out their scheduled HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy) inspections.

The inspections form part of our licencing agreements with the Council and ensure that all of our properties are meeting their stringent health, safety and security standards.

If you would like to find out more about HMO licences, be sure to check out the SRC’s (Student Representative Council) excellent guide at www.glasgowunisrc.org/advice/accommodation/hmos/.

Will my flat be inspected?

The team from the Council will decide which rooms and flats they are going to inspect when they arrive on site so, whilst everyone in your residence will be notified about the visits, you may not receive one. With breaches potentially incurring charges however, it is always best to get prepared and be ready for the inspectors.

How can I prepare for an inspection?

As the inspections are primarily related to our Health and Safety practices, you will already be following these steps as matter of course but you should always remember that:

  • Fire doors, either to your bedroom or kitchen, should never be wedged open
  • Sockets and extension leads should never be overloaded
  • Smoke or heat detectors should never be covered
  • You should never leave your hob unattended if it’s switched on and in use
  • You should only store and use kitchen appliances in the kitchen

We’re sure that your living space is always clean and tidy but it’s always vitally important to ensure that you have have a clear path from your bed to the door in your bedroom and that and there are no obstacles lying around in hallways.

Any more questions?

If you have any more questions about the inspections or would like more guidance about keeping your flat clean please don’t hesitate to contact your site team and they’ll be happy to talk you through the process.
