Before you apply, check your social media...

Don't let an off-colour post cost you that new job!

Whether you're hoping to find a part-time job, internship or a something full-time, your social media could seriously hold you back.

Most of the time, people forget about the effect this can have. But that's a big mistake! According to one study, 91% of employers now routinely review their candidates social media channels, including Instagram, X, TikTok and Facebook, to see if they match up to their CV/application forms or just to look for indicators of attitudes and behaviours.

That's exactly why you shouldn't let your social media persona let you down in real life. You might think those videos and statuses from Saturday night are hilarious, but your future boss? Not so much!

Not to worry though, we've put together some advice that you should probably have a look at before you start applying for your ideal job:

1️⃣ Nip your complaining in the bud

Employers prefer a positive attitude over a negative one so don't claim to be Mr/Mrs. Happy when your feed is full complaints about every Tom, Dick and Harry. Your potential boss may assume that they will be next in line!

2️⃣ Delete any foul-mouthed rants

It screams unprofessional. We all have a bad day from time to time but that doesn't need to be aired all over social media when you're in a bad mood. Save that for ranting to your flatmates and your Mum!

3️⃣ Don't get caught out telling lies

You might have said 'I love playing sport and take pride in being part of a football team' but if there are no pictures of you playing sport on your social media pages, it'll may raise a few questions. Just don't exaggerate anything or you'll look daft in your interview. If you make it that far...

4️⃣ Being offensive doesn't get you anywhere, believe it or not

You'll be surprised how many people don't think before they post. Even celebrities like Gary Lineker and Stormzy have had to apologise for things they've posted in the past so avoid comments around race, sexuality, gender, religion etc.

5️⃣ Make them fun and interesting

Just because you don't want to look stupid or offend anyone, doesn't mean your Instagram has to reflect nothing about your life! Try to get your personality to shine through so employers can imagine what you're like and find out more about you.

6️⃣ Is that another selfie?

There is nothing wrong with taking the occasional selfie but your pictures should make you seem friendly, fun and represent you as well as possible. You don't want it to show off your body or make you look silly because, in all honesty, some people do judge a book by its cover.

If you'd prefer, create some professional accounts instead. This way you can take a different tone and discuss topics surrounding the sector that employers would find interesting without worrying they'd know everything about you. Sign up to LinkedIn and remember to make your personal accounts private!
