Get into sport in a relaxed, friendly environment!

Posted 2 weeks ago

Join one of GUSA and UofGSport's new recreational sessions

If you'd like to get involved in sport at entry-level and in a friendly, beginner-oriented environment, the folks at GUSA (Glasgow University Sports Association) and UofGSport may have just the opportunity for you!

They've created a number of exclusive sessions to help introduce you to sport, get fit, have fun and make friends into the bargain.

Some of the sessions do not require a UofG Sport membership and others do so be sure to check them out before you go. You can also pay £5.50 for a day pass for the Stevenson Building. For more info on gym memberships, you'll get all the detail on the UofGSport website.

Check out the full timetable below and head to the GUSA web page for more information.

Semester One Timetable

Monday

1800-1900: Inclusive Swimming (Stevenson Building, Swimming Pool)

These sessions are designed to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for members with disabilities, and members seeking extra support in the pool. Coaches focus on individualised guidance, centring each session around the person to enhance their technique, skills, and confidence.

No UofG Sport membership is required for this so, if you are interested, just contact the UofGSport team and they'll be happy to give you more info!

Tuesday

1800-1900: Pickleball drop-in (Stevenson Building, Activity Hall)

This is a fun and relaxed way to play pickleball, a sport which is becoming more and more popular. Equipment is provided and it is a great way to destress after a day of uni.

A UofG Sport membership/day pass is required for entry.

Wednesday

1400-1600: 5-a-side football (Super Soccer, 33 Scotland Street, G5 8NB [right beside West Street subway])

What it says on the tin. No experience is needed and no teams are needed beforehand, students can just turn up, they are put in teams and are able to play football against other students. This is under cover, so even if it is raining the sessions still go ahead, and the facility is a 1 minute walk from West Street subway station.

No UofG Sport membership is required, although there is a charge of £5 per session, which can be paid through clicking this link and searching for GUSA Recreational Football

Thursday

1500-1700: Table Tennis drop-in (Stevenson Building, Sports Hall)

This session offers a fun way to play recreational table tennis. All equipment is provided.

A UofG Sport membership/day pass is required for entry.

1800-1900: Inclusive Swimming (Stevenson Building, Swimming Pool)

The same as the Monday session.

Friday

1300-1400: Recstravaganza - Stevenson Building, usually Sports Hall.

These sessions are run by GUSA and are completely free to attend. A different GUSA club runs the session each week, and it is a great way for students to discover the diverse range of sports on offer within GUSA. For example, for the rest of this semester we have judo, badminton, fencing, handball, volleyball, cricket, shorinji kempo, and muay thai lined up. People from the club are on hand to lead the sessions, which are a real highlight of the GUSA recreational offering.
