Residence Life would not be what it is without our fantastic residents! Students are the heart of building authentic community within our accommodations, and a big way that this happens is through our Halls Activity Team!
What is the Halls Activity Team?
Students living within our accommodations can volunteer their time and join the Halls Activity Team, a group which work together to put on a variety of different student engagement activities within our halls. They offer up their event ideas, their unique skills, and their energy to bring fellow students together. Student-led events make sure that the activities provided by Residence Life are what students want to see and reflect the diverse interests of our various student accommodation communities.
The Halls Activity Team (H.A.T) is a vibrant part of the residence experience, with previous volunteers expressing that getting involved in ResLife activities helped them to feel more settled in their accommodation and more connected to the people around them, not just their flatmates.
What are the roles?
We know students are busy! We also know that students are looking for opportunities to develop their skillsets for the workplace. So to cater to the different levels of commitment that students might be able to give we have different types of volunteer roles within the H.A.T.
👋Community Co-ordinators: create well-organised, welcoming events that bring people together. Each Community Co-ordinator leads a team of Community Connectors who support the planning and delivery of events. Co-ordinators will also act as the main point of contact for their Connectors throughout the role.
🤝 Community Connectors: help create a welcoming environment where people feel comfortable, included, and connected. They don't need to be the loudest person in the room - often the most effective connectors are approachable, observant, and genuinely interested in others.
We recruit both roles at each of our sites, so there will be an individual HAT group per accommodation. However, our teams work closely and come together to work on larger events such as day-trips. So it's a great way of meeting students outwith your own accommodation and being part of something bigger!
Below are some questions and answers about the roles:
We are passionate about making sure that students who are part of our Halls Activity Team feel like valued members of the team, so we work hard to ensure that they get access to lots of benefits and rewards through their role. These include:
- Professional Development, staff coaching, and additional training - great for your CV
- Volunteer Awards and recognition towards your HEAR transcript
- Exclusive early access to larger events and trips
- Exclusive team building events for our volunteers
- Fantastic leadership opportunity and chance to develop valuable interpersonal skills
- A fun and supportive role, with opportunities for creativity!
We don't want being part of the Halls Activity Team to interfere with your studies or your wellbeing.
As a community coordinator, we ask you to commit to planning/delivering 3-4 events per semester (that’s around 1 per month) with the support of the ResLife Staff Team. Once you’ve completed 3-4 events, you’re sorted and if you’re up for doing more, we’re here to cheer you on and support you 🎉
If you're a community connector, we ask that you are available to assist with at least 2 events per semester.
If you're ever feeling overwhelmed with your Halls Activity Team workload, a member of the Residents Life staff team will be happy to chat to you and find a better balance between your academic and volunteering workload. We want you to have fun in this role, so please let us know if you have any concerns.
It's absolutely normal to feel anxious or nervous when you’re thinking of joining a new role. If you have any worries, please reach out to one of our friendly Residence Life staff members and we can chat through any concerns you might have about the role.
Although it might feel a bit scary to put yourself out there, doing so in a supportive environment like our Halls Activity Team can make all the difference, and can support you to feel more confident.
There's no experience needed to join either a connector or coordinator role (though some experience of events might be helpful for a coordinator role).
As part of our induction process, will start you off with all the training and tools you’ll need to succeed in the role. We also offer ongoing training and meetups to help you feel more confident and have a chance to socialise with the rest of the team outside of events.
Come along to a ResLife event and you'll meet them! They'll be wearing a t-shirt that says Residence Life so you'll know who to go to. Our volunteers will be able to speak to you about their experience in the role, or take on any ideas of feedback you might have about the types of activities Residence Life provide.
If you'd like to be connected to your team then you can also contact us at reslifecommunity@glasgow.ac.uk
That's so exciting that you're thinking of getting involved! Please email reslifecommunity@glasgow.ac.uk and a member of our team will share some more information with you and answer any further questions you have.
