On the go, in your room and at a lecture
University life can be exciting but also quite stressful at times, with lectures, assignments, and social commitments piling up. Finding quick and effective ways to destress is essential to maintaining your wellbeing during a busy schedule. Whether you're rushing between classes, relaxing in your room, or even sitting in a lecture, there are simple strategies you can use to manage stress and regain your focus.
On the go
- Deep breathing: Take a minute to focus on slow, deep breaths while walking or commuting. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. This helps lower stress quickly.
- Music break: Pop in your headphones and listen to calming or upbeat music to shift your mood on the move.
- Power walk: A brisk 5-10 minute walk between classes can help reduce tension, clear your mind, and boost your energy levels, helping you feel more focused.
In your room
- Stretching/yoga: A few minutes of stretching or simple yoga poses can relieve muscle tension.
- Quick tidy-up: A decluttered space can help clear your mind and reduce stress.
- Creative outlet: Whether it's doodling or writing in a journal, expressing your thoughts creatively can be a soothing activity.
At a lecture
- Grounding techniques: Engage your senses by focusing on five things you can see, four things you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste.
- Breath focus: Quietly practice breath control during class. Deep breathing can help reset your mind and regain focus.
- Mini mindfulness: Give yourself time to think by taking a moment to think and assess the situation. This will allow your mind to organise itself and come up with small steps/easy wins.
